The last time #TEAMw21 met up with Jenn Bostic it was at the Green Note, and for a couple of hours we were enthralled not just with her familiar hits but also with her more faith based material. An entire room singing "Amazing Grace" can do that to you. All of which bring us to her latest single "Kingdom".
There is something of an air of grandeur about the opening, it suggest matters of great importance are to be relayed. A piano with a heavenly string sound, finds Jenn in a most contemplative mood - wondering if she has wandered off track in life.
"I think it all comes down to the question
Who's it end up serving in the end?
Is it just propping up my foolish pride?
Making much of my designs
All wrapped up in a scripture or two"
It must be a hard balancing act to reconcile being a singer, making records and all that it entails with finding time to step back and see if the other part of your life is still on track,
"I'm starting to suspect this firm foundation
May not be quite as firm as I had claimed"
The chorus brings those doubts to the fore
"I told myself that it's all for your glory
Convinced myself, my selflessness was real
But if I'm being honest - I'm just not sure it's true
That this Kingdom I've been building is for you"
From a distance it would seem Jenn is being a little harsh on herself, and as the song develops it does become something of an unburdening.
"This is my confession now
My best laid plans aren't working out
I'm all worn out and there's still so much to do"
although it does lead to an epiphany
"It's your Kingdom, I'm just here for you"
"Kingdom" finds Jenn in great voice and her heart is very much on her sleeve for this one and it will probably find many who share her same doubts. If this song helps someone along the way then surely she can feel assured she is indeed on the right path.
