It's a slightly grumpy determined looking Gary Quinn staring out from the cover of his latest single "Watch Me". Not a follow on from 2021's "Catch Me" but a definite theme starting!
It's a rootsier sounding Gazza than perhaps we are used to with Western guitars a blazing on the intro setting the scene for Gary to come in and explain that he's not happy, perceiving he's been held back and the first verse gives the restrainer both barrels
"You said I was a weak one - never be a someone
Funny how the tables turned.
Put yourself on a pedestal think your invincible
About time I made you learn"
It's a song about being held back by those who don't share the faith that you have in yourself.
"Tried to drown my dreams in gasoline - but you lit a fire in me
Now I'm gonna do, what you said I couldn't do
Don't choke on the dust I leave"
The chorus is effectively a defiant burst of "I'll show you's" as Gary reels off what he is going to do
"Watch me tear it up , watch me burn it down
Like a mustang blazing through this town
Watch me bring the heat, watch me lose control
Like the meanest bull at the rodeo
Just like the wind you can't rope me in
I'm as free at the air you breathe
"Watch me crank up the crazy - Best get out of my way
You don't think I've got in me"
Although it took repeated plays to realise it wasn't "Watch me crank up the crazy biscuit!" whatever that would have meant!
It ends with a suitably snarly "Watch Me!"
The second verse touches on the American iconic cultural figures, of "Renegades" and "Rebel without a cause" and of being a loner. The electric guitars become louder and are much more prominent in the mix, in fact after the second chorus there is a bit of a tribute to Southern rock
The middle section finds Gary repeating the mantra
"Said I was the weak one never be someone ( Watch Me )
Going to do it on my own - - don't need anyone ( Watch Me)"
The final chorus is a rage unleashed - with Gary's vocals almost straining with anger on the final word of
"You don't think I've got it in me"
If there's one thing left slightly unresolved it is what it is that Gary is actually being stopped from doing or who is actually preventing him but let's not let that get in the way of a rocking return to form.
