#TEAMw21 have previously covered Americana singers from Germany and Sweden and now in a first we have some Polish country and it is undoubtedly rather good. Agata Karczewska ( pronounce Kar-chef-ska) may not have English as her primary language yet that in no way prevents her from creating lyrics rich in narrative, and her Polish musicians play a most authentic country style. With the addition of a quirky organ sound. at least on this single, there is a refreshing overall sound quite unlike anything else, it's almost a new wave / country crossover - and we love it!
The opening twenty seconds or so actually more invoke the sound of a classic soul record, built around an engaging guitar riff before moving on to a more rootsy country sound. Certainly the moment Agata starts to sing you know are in a country song - and right in the middle of the action.
"Go ahead prescribe your silent treatment
Talking's something I can do without
Smash a plate offend me like you mean it
It's only words they'll wash away
But changing locks and walking around
And staying up all night in town
What's so impressive about these girls?"
Agata's voice is a mixture of sounds and emotions, there's a certain rawness to it, yet there is also a country twang, undoubtedly there's a streak of sassiness that runs right through this record.
"And who will show you the way to my room
Cause pleasure got unbearable too soon
And truth seems more like some faded tattoo
Future less miserable with you
My face ain't made of regrets
But somehow it's all you can see
Used to say it's better sorry than safe
I guess you don't mean what you say"
A jangling country guitar solo plays over out a Vox Continental style organ in a most enthralling single.
With an EP to soon follow there's going to lots more you'll be hearing from Agata Karczewska
