Having caught our eye and indeed our ear on her recent trip to London for C2C, here is Callie Twisselmans' latest single "The King & Queen Of Recklessnes". It comes with a quirky sound and little background vocals that might make it seem a little lighthearted at first, maybe Callie is trying to sneak this one under the radar as it is quite a sad little song in it's way, of a couple doomed to break up and get back together ad infintum and it verbally paints quite a grim picture under its undeniably bouncy tune.
The opening has a drum beat and guitars playing slightly eccentric guitar lines that give it a slighly unusual sound. The words though say something else
"Six months could roll by and you never crossed my mind
Truth is i don't think that much about you
Well maybe that's half true"
Already the dysfunctional seeds are being sown
"Mama says it's time that I find somebody new
Who treats me right and holds a candle to you but"
Callie is able to perfectly vocalise, this eternal circle, never more so than on the chorus
"Just when we're off we're on again
You call me up and I pretend
This ain't a game
That I know that I won't win
Cause right now i just wanna feel something
Maybe it the long lonely nights
Maybe I'm just tired of the fight
Back and forth like we're just playing chess
King & Queen of Recklessness"
The dilemma between knowing it's wrong yet not wanting to be alone is a complex issue played out all over the globe with people who perenially are not good for each other making and breaking up.
"It's like you got me under some sick little spell
I cant decide if I despise you or I wish you well
I can't control the way I feel
It's like you know I'll come undone
Why do you do it? - Do you do it just for fun?"
The cycle then begins again.
It's a great little country pop song and it s definitely a little deeper than it might appear on first listen - if it goes on to help people who might recognise themselves in it then Callie the Californian Farmer's Daughter will have done a great job.
