Having made some of the team go weak at the knees at his show at The Oak Live, #TEAMw21 thought we'd dig into Cam's recorded output. One of his more recent tunes and a stand out song on the night we saw him, was "What's Already Gone". It is actually something of a rarity in that it's a gentle break up song rather than one laced with bitterness about cheating or moping about being dumped.
An opening of piano and guitar lays the groundwork for Cam's smooth voice to come in . It initially paints a picture of what once was domestic bliss.
"This brick house we built together
Your Momma said that we'd forever last"
Yet times and feelings change and Cam finds himself having to break the bad news
"I never thought I'd have to say "Goodbye"
And I never meant to make an angel cry"
The chorus makes it clear that the receiver of the bad news is not taking it well and thinks that things can be rekindled, any hope of that sure is put to rest with the final line. The sound has a fantastic mandolin sound cutting through everything and there is an almost weeping pedal steel, adding to the overall sadness.
"Doesn't matter how much you tell me
Doesn't matter how hard we try
You can't fix these broken pieces
Everything falls out of line
I know you're thinking we can start it over
I know you're wishing we can turn back time
Get back to the days that I'd called you mine
We fell out of love, we should've known, this never felt like home
Girl it's time for you to stop holding on, to what's already gone"
The second verse sees the arrival of the percussion to beef up the overall sound, If there were any further doubts as to whether things could be salvaged this verse surely quells them, where there's a nice contrast between the candle on the table alight prepared by the person trying to keep things alive while the other side of the relationship is not able to able to raise a spark of enthusiasm,
"No amount of roses in my hand
Or candlelight dinner dates you planned
Can reignite the fire we once hand
You keep on telling yourself this can't be true
But deep down we both know it's what we had to do"
The final words are delivered in a delightfully deep timbre on this all round very caring good natured break up tune.
