Ahead of his trip to the UK later this month, Ron Pope has a new single out "The Life In Your Years" that finds him in the most contemplative of moods. As a single it may seem an unlikely choice, it is just Ron and his acoustic guitar, no fancy gimmicks, no studio trickery just honest playing and singing.
It examines the truism that there is no point living a long life if you do nothing, there needs to be some quality and Ron picks out moments and people close to him.
"I am fighting the pull of some neon and glass
But I'll end up on my ass, if I go back to that
If you're passing through town, stop at my Mama's house
Tell her I'm safe and sound, head six feet above ground"
The above verse is the one area of the song when there is a reflection that hints at a time that when things may not have been so productive - It is sung with a slight raspy snarl as if angry with himself for that period, however for the most part, the song is Ron blessing a happy life for all in a softer timbre.
"May the Lord bless and keep you when I'm so far away
God protect all our babies, let them grow old and grey
When I'm gone please recall all the good I saw here
It's not the years in your life it's the life in your years"
It all sets the scene for his forthcoming visit and indeed his forthcoming album, "American Man, American Music" on February 14th via Brooklyn Basement Records
