Sometimes after listening to a lot of music as #TEAMw21 had to prior to and during C2C you need a little palette cleanser to reset your critical faculties. Here at #TEAMw21 we are also always keen to promote the idea that less can be more and that a beautiful simply realised song can often beat weeks and weeks of overproduction. With their single "Move On" The Jaywalkers succeed on both fronts with a tune that is essentially just a couple of instruments and some vocals yet the result is so much more.
This great little single had been on our list to review prior to C2C but pressures of time meant that we missed it's release date but it was too good to let pass unnoticed. A delightful mixture of mandolin, fiddle and double bass with seemingly no additions provides an endearing four and a half minutes of joy.
Normally we might rail against a nearly 40 second introduction, but here it perfectly sets the scene, first the mandolin opens things, the fiddle then joins readying us for the vocal to come in.
When Jay Bradberry does eventually open the vocals, it is clear what the term "Move On" is referring to - There is a lovely turn of phrase used and finally the realisation that affirmative action must be taken.
"What a waste of water, what a waste of time
Spending hours crying over you
I could flood my garden with the tears I've cried
But it's time I heal myself"
The chorus is basically the words of encouragement Move On repeated six times
The natural doubts that come after a break are also poetically handled,
"Will I find another, will I break my fall
Do I even know which way to turn
If that flood drains quickly will I find it all
And put it back together now"
Uplifting playing and a joy to listen to - our palette is well and truly cleansed!!
